Analysis of Music Magazines

By analysing music magazine covers, this will help me with inspiration for my album cover and promotional poster.

Q Magazine

For the front cover of Q magazine they have used mainly red, black, white and silver as a colour theme. These colours have a great impact on the cover as they create a theme of darkness, gothic and anger. I like the colours and I think that they contrast extremely well with each other. It also makes the text and the photograph bolder and stand out more.
The words printed on the magazine cover are big. This is an important feature as it needs to be eye catching to the viewer. By using bold lettering and Times New Roman font this draws the viewer in. The largest of the texts are down the sides of the cover and along the bottom which highlight the rest of the cover.
The singer and famous X factor judge, Cheryl Cole, is featured on the front of the cover. By having a high profile celebrity on the front of the magazines draws viewers in and attracts a large, younger, target audience of both boys and girls. by Having Cheryl Cole on the front of the magazine she is representing her own music and the style of music featured and represented by the magazine.
The way that Cheryl Cole has been styled represents almost a vampire style. She is wearing bright red lipstick and dark eyeliner to compliment her pale complexion. Her hair is wet which connects with the graphic rain effects on the front. This shows that the style of hair and makeup is important as it gives out a specific message at draws in certain target audiences.
The title and the strap line is Q the UK’s biggest music magazine' is situated on the left-side third of the magazine and has been layered on top of the photograph of Cheryl Cole. The cover lines are short and advertise the stories published in the magazine. They suggest that there are articles in the magazine about the named bands on the cover. The title, cover lines and photograph are closely packed together which gives the cover a urgent and crowded feel. They interest the reader as the magazine is about music and popular bands are feature inside. This interests the reader as they are most likely to listen to their music. At a glance you can identify the contents as there are six cover lines listed on the left-side third of the cover. The size and the layout are clear and easy to read. Some of the cover lines aren’t visible from a distance but the bigger cover lines are visible and the title of the magazine is easy to read. The magazine cover stands out on the shelf due to the choice of colour and theme that easily attracts the reader. The photograph on the cover also stands out as Cheryl Cole is modelling and is a big well known celebrity that people can relate to easily.
The language on the cover is short and snappy which grabs the reader’s attention and relates to the young target audience of the magazine. The language is also persuasive and draws the reader in making them want to read the articles inside the magazine.
Overall I think that the magazine gives a good indication of what it is about as the cover lines list popular bands. The cover is designed to appeal to an audience of age between 16 and 30. The cover represents the reader’s interests as Cheryl Cole is displayed on the front. She is a well known celebrity, especially with a younger audience. An older audience would not be interested in buying this magazine as they wouldn’t listen to the music feature in the magazine and they wouldn’t be inclined to buy it as the model used and the colour theme would not attract them. This shows that design is extremely important in order to attract the correct targeted audeince.

Clash Magazine

Clash

For Clash Magazine the colours used on the cover are mainly grey, yellow, white and black. These colours keep a light and almost a club theme to the magazine. The colours contrast well with each other and they make the text and the photograph stand out.
The words on the cover are large and eye catching as they use bold and modern fonts print in bright eye catching colours. The title and the cover lines are spaciously placed around the main photograph in the middle of the magazine. The slanted font on the word ‘weekend’ suggests a sense of speed and excitement.
The image on the main cover is the band Vampire Weekend which targets the young 16 – 30 audience. The younger end of the audience of people aged 16 – 20 are probably the people who aspire to be like the band of the cover, if they are interested in the bands music have been styled with a casual but smart style with a navy theme. They are dressed in shirts, ties and blazers which are accompanied with jeans and trainers. They have also been styled with a ‘bed hair’ look to their hair which matches their casual/smart dress but is still clearly visible to the reader or onlooker. There are also cover lines along the left-side third of the magazine, which are spread out and don’t give the cover a crowded feel. The cover lines suggest that there are articles about the bands that are named on the cover which interests the reader as they may have bought the magazine because of the cover lines. The plug on the left-side third identifies the contents of the magazine at a glance as does the short puff on the right-side third of the magazine. The size and the layout of the magazine is spacious and easy to read from a distance as if it were on a shelf. The colours, theme and the text make the magazine stand out on the shelf which catches the readers’ eye and makes them want to buy the magazine.
The language sharply addresses the reader as the text is short and snappy with words such as ‘bloodthirsty!’ It attracts the younger audience. The language is also persuasive with ad get features such as ‘download them free!’
Overall I think that the cover has it’s own effect on it’s targeted audience however I don’t think that it is as effective as Q Magazine as the theme and colours for
Q have a bigger impact and is more effective. It also has a more well known celebrity on the cover which is another reason as to why is it more effective than Clash Magazine. The magazine gives a good impression of what’s inside as the people photographed on the cover have been styled well and look like a professional band that are representing music. It’s been designed to appeal to a younger audience aged 16 – 30 most likely men which is represented clearly by the photograph on the front and the type of music that the target audience listen to. An older audience would not be interested in buying this magazine as they would not be able to relate to the band on the front of the cover. An older audience wouldn’t by this magazine as they wouldn’t listen to the music feature inside and the colour theme would not attract them therefore they would not be inclined to buy the magazine.
