In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products?
There are many different techniques that I have used throughout my media product that use forms of conventions from real media products. For example, most contemporary pop songs like the song I have used have storylines of love and heartbreak within their promotional music video. The typical conventions include recurrent shots of the artist miming their song and shots following the storyline of the music video. I followed this convention by having both miming shots and storyline shots throughout my video and all in different locations to create diversity yet continuity throughout the video. The pace of the editing, lighting and a clear narrative is also an important convention used as it expresses the emotion connected to the video. For my video, the pace of editing was slow during the beginning and middle sections of my video. I felt that the slow pace of the video was suitable for the song and the slowness matched well with the sad storyline and followed conventions of other music videos like mine e.g. Because of you by Kelly Clarkson.
With the lighting I decided to develop this convention rather than follow it. Through my research I found that most music video’s of the same musical genre use lighting to express the emotion of the storyline. With love and heartbreak storylines I found that lighting was dark to show sadness e.g. Broken Arrow by Pixie Lott shows a darkness when her ex-love who she misses is shown throughout the video. To develop the convention of lighting further, I decided to make the colouring and lighting brighter on the shots when my character was with her love to show the happiness that she feels when she is with him.
Then later on in my video there are shots that show my character alone. When editing I darkened the colouring and lighting to show her emotions of sadness and loss which contrast from video such as Broken Arrow.
In my video the storyline is based on the main protagonist which is a convention of most music videos that have a storyline to them. I have also used intertextuality in my video as my understanding of Todorov’s theory is used within the storyline along with Freytag’s pyramid theory. This can be seen as the storyline starts of cal, then builds up at the end to its climax. This is important as it shows how the protagonist is shown emotionally being happy to sad as the death of her love is revealed.
Looking at the final cut of my video it is clear how much the lighting does play a big part through my music video when expressing emotions and moods. It also helps the narrative of the story and without it the storyline could not be clear to the audience.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
With my music video I also put together a digi pak including a CD cover and promotional poster to append with the music video. I think that my digi pak links in well with the music video as both stay within the same musical genre. I think the reason that they match so well is due the colours, fonts and location of photos used for the CD cover and poster. Without careful research, planning and referencing back to the footage I had gather for the video, the digi-pak could not have been as effective and wouldn’t have matched well with the video. This would also be seen a false advertising as the CD and Poster wouldn’t be doing its job as a promotion for the video and the song. I had to plan the layout, font, colours and images carefully in order to attract the correct target audience. The images I chose for the digi pack were all contrasting as some where taken in the woods and some on the beach however both locations match with the video as the same locations are featured within it.
I played around with the images for the front and back cover and came to the conclusion that the beach shot was better on the back and the woods shot was better on the front as the woods shot contrasted and fitted better with the name of the album ‘October’ along with the autumn leaves in the image. I felt these images were in their suitable places and gave the product its signature. I also chose a bold and unusual font for the title of the album both on the CD cover and poster so that it would be a recognisable image for the audience who could then associate the title with the product easily. When putting together the products it showed me how important my planning was to then draw in the correct audience and to have both media products contrast yet combine well together.
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Looking back at my audience feedback it has shown me how important that planning and research is for such a product. Once I had done a brainstorm of ideas and notes, I put up a poll on my blog to see that what ideas I had, were the most popular. I then put questions on the poll to help decide on locations and storylines for the video and other ideas for the digi pak. Once I had chosen the song, the votes from my polls really helped me with the planning as to what my target audience would be and what my chosen target audience would be looking for. It also helped me when making the products as I could then refer back to what they had voted for and what would be most successful through the progress of putting everything together. While editing the products I asked people to look at my work so far to see if they would change anything or do anything differently. This helped me as I could then change things that my audience didn’t like in order to make it more successful. Once the product was finish I asked a few people who fitted within my target audience range, to watch the video and look and the digi pak and tell me honestly what they thought. They were very pleased with my products and most commented on the twist at the end of the video saying that it was very clever. From my audience feedback I have learnt that outside opinion is very important when creating media products as it can make the product even more successful and I gave me a different angle of viewing and editing my products.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
When making my video and digi pak I used media technologies in many different ways. When editing my music video I used one of the more important technologies of Premiere Pro, a programme that I had never used before but was quickly able to learn how to use due to my knowledge from using windows movie maker for various other projects. This programme helped me with editing the footage I had gathered and making it into a music video. The next most important technology that I used within making my media products was the internet. The internet played a big part when researching and planning my video and digi pak as I was able to search other videos through Google and watch them online through websites such as YouTube. With this great advantage I was then able to analyse lighting, editing and camera angles in the videos and use them for ideas and inspiration for my own. The internet was also important as it has enabled me to use blogger to post my planning and research and to show my target audience the progress that I have made with my media products.
Photoshop also played a big part, especially when putting together my digi pak. From using Photoshop previously with another media project I could use my knowledge to create a good digi pak and in a quicker time than previous projects I also felt that, once I looked at my final products on Photoshop that my skills had improved. For the digi pak I also used a digital camera to take the photos that would be shown on the front and back cover. I used a digital video camera to capture the footage that I would need for my video.

The Final Products
Editing and Changes to CD Cover
After creating my promotional poster I chose on a select number of photos taken from the beach or the woods, that were of good quality and frame and would be suitable for the cover either on the front the back or the inside.
Front Cover
Stage 1
After choosing my photo I opened up photo shop and chose a square shape canvas that I would work on for the CD cover. I then imported the image.
Stage 2
Once I had imported the image and choose the canvas size, I cropped the picture to the canvas and flipped it 90 degrees horizontally so it framed the canvas and looked professional. I also flipped it so that it left me space to put the headings in the top left corner.
Stage 3
Once I had cropped the photo, like the promotional poster I experiment with colour, lighting and contrast. Once I had experiment with different effects I decided on changing the colour of the photo by editing the brightness and contrast. I also used ‘Unsharp Mask’ to make the photo clearer. Here you can see the difference.
Stage 4
Once I had edited the colour, I added the text. I used the same font type for the name of the album and artists name so that it matched the promotional poster and would be able to be recognised by the audience as the albums logo. However I didn't use the same colour theme as the promotional poster as I didn't think the orange contrasted well with the green and brown colour of the woods.
Stage 5
After adding the heading I then added the same pug that I put onto the promotional poster. This is so that again the audience can associated with the album and the brand.
Stage 6
I then created a spine for the CD cover by using the same photo, colour theme and heading.
Back Cover
For the back cover I followed the same stages of 1, 2 and 3 as I had on the front cover. I imported the photo onto a square canvas and cropped it and experimented with the colour, lighting and contrast.
Stage 4
I then added the track names in the same font and colour as the artists name on the front so to follow through with the theme. I moved the track names around so that they went vertical down the cover yet in an unusual curvy patterning.
Stage 5
To then make the back cover more like a professional CD cover I added credits a bar code and a web address. The text was all in the same font as the track names so to continue the theme I also put the features spaced out in suitable places from the track names.
Once I had added these features I thought that my product was complete as I had followed the usual convetions of the back cover of a CD pack.
I also experimented with other photos for the back and front cover however I thought that the images of the stages shown above where the better options as they didnt drown out any text or headings. I think the two photos of the beach and the woods both contrast well and I think they fit well with the headings and features.

Editing Promotional Poster
Promotional Poster
Stage 1
After taking the photos in the woods and on the beach, I decided which photo that I thought would be best for the promotional poster. I chose the photo below I thought the scenery was interesting to look at I thought that it was frame very well and would be extremely suitable.
Stage 2
After chosing my photo I opened up photo shop and selected the correct shape canvas that I would need to work on so I chose U.S paper size as the shape for my poster.
Stage 3
After choosing my file size I had to rotate it to landscape so that my chosen picture would onto it I then cropped the picture slightly so that it framed the canvas well and looked professional.
Stage 4
After cropping the photo on the canvas, I decided to play around with the colours and lighting of the photo. After experimenting with different effects I decided that I liked that black and white contrast the best. Once I had changed the colour to the photo, I added the special effect 'Lens Flare' to the picture to make it more interesting.
Stage 5
After editing the photo I was then able to start adding text. I added to layers of text, one being the name of the album and the other being the artists name. I then experimented with fonts and colours to see which ones contrasted well together and wasn't swallowed up by the background. I eventually decided on Orange for the name of the album in 'Rough Linen' font. I thought Orange was a great colour to use as it's vibrant and powerful and goes well with the black and white of the photograph.
I then decided to use black for the name of the artist as I also thought this stood out well against the background. I decided on the positioning of the headings as the background wasn't busy in the top left corner to drown out the headings. This postion would be better as it would then catch the audiences eye.
Stage 6
I then added two more layers of texts to the posters to show the release date of the album. I used the same colours as the headings in the top left corners so to follow through with the theme of orange, black and white, however I put the second heading in white instead of black as black wouldn't have stood out as much.
Stage 7
I then added a pug to the poster to make it look more like an advertisment. I inserted a black circle shape and changed the opacity to 50% so that the background could still be seen through the circle. I then added a text layer over the cicle and moved it so it fitted within the circle. I put the text in a capital font and in white so that it stood out on the black circle background.
Once I felt that nothing else needed to be added to the poster, I was happy with my final product.

Photos
Initial Ideas for Promotional Music Poster
For my first initial idea I have gone against conventions and drawn the poster design landscape. The location of the photograph is on a beach therefore the colour scheme wil have to match the colours in the photo. The headings will be a contrast of blue and white which will be the colour scheme for this poster. The colours will create a summer feel to the album which will then make the poster bright and therefore appealing to an audience.
The main title of the poster is big and bright and takes up the middle left side of the photograph, where the picture has a farely bare background so it's easier to read. The name of the artist fits underneath the name of the album. So not to over power the name of the album the artists name is in a slightly smaller italic font, in a different contrasting colour to the name of the album. The release date is in a Times New Roman font, to stand out against the album and artist name. This heading is positioned along the bottom of the poster in a big text in order for the audience to read from far away as if the poster was on a billboard. The pug is also positioned at the bottom right hand corner of the poster next to the large release date. I like this design and I think it fits in well with the photograph.
The photo on the poster will be taken of the artist on the beach. As I am the artist I will need someone to take the photos for me so I will frame up the shot and then get someone to take it.
The pug on the bottom right corner is an advertisement for the poster and the album indicating what’s inside in album e.g. a special featured song, other tracks names. I think this layout is good as it’s big enough for the viewer to associate with if it were on a billboard.
I think this design gives a good indication of what the product is and what it is about. It’s designed to appeal to my market of young girls aged 12-19 I also think it represents the viewers interest well as the posters consists of everything needed to know about the release of the album. I do think however that the poster and the album will not appeal to people who like rock or gothic music as it’s clear that the cover doesn’t address that type of audience by the type of image and colour scheme.
For my second initial idea I have come up with the colour scheme of white and orange inspired from my analysis of Kerry Ellis’ album. I really like this colour scheme and I think that it creates a bold and bright feel to the front cover. As the image will be taken in a studio the background will be white and I think that this will contrast well with the orange text. I think these colours give a professional impression to the album. The image will be in black and white which I think will go well with the orange and white and make the cover look modern.
The title of the album will be in a bold text across the top of the front cover with the artist’s name at the bottom. The pug is positioned to the right side of the cover next to the close up shot of the artist. The artists name is in italic to contrast with the bold text. The release date of the album will go across the right side of the poster in a bold orange text to be eye catching to the viewer so they know when the album will be released. By having a bold text this makes the album cover look bolder, makes the title stand out and attracts the viewer.
On the front of the cover there is an image of the artist. The photo is a close up that will be taken in a photography studio with a white background. As said before, the picture will be in black and white to create a modern feel to the album. The image on the cover represents the artist and the music on the album so she will need to be dressed in glamourous (but not too loud) outfit so that the audience can gain some idea of what is on the album. The image of the artist will show her holding a pose facing sideways but looking at the camera. This will show that the artist is bold, by looking into the camera but a little bit shy as she is facing sideways. Her hair will be down and curly as I think that curly hair gives a softer look to the artist which will go better with the theme of the album cover. The artist’s makeup will also be softer and natural looking, with no harsh makeup e.g. dark eye shadow. This then will create a natural and soft look.
On the cover there is a pug which is a simple convention of a promotional poster. The pug shows the viewer what’s the album is about e.g. a hit single that has been included or a bouns track. I really like the size and the layout of this design. I think is bold and confident and would definitely stand out in a magazine or billboard.
I think the cover gives a good indication of what the artists music is about. It’s bold and modern which represents the music on the album and is a good message to send out to the audience as the album is aimed mostly towards young girls and they will be most likely to buy the album and like the artists music that is bold and modern than one that is gothic or rocky.
For my third initial idea the the poster will be landscape. The colour scheme for this promotional poster is blue and white. As the main image on the cover is to be taken on the beach I think the blue and white will contrast well with the blue from the sky and blue also from the sea. As the image is set on the beach I think this will create a summery feel to the poster. The blue and white of the text will be positioned across the sand on the beach so there won’t be objects in the background that could then clash with colours of the text.
The main title of the album is at the bottom of the poster just above and layered over the name of the artist. Both headings will be layered on top of a white banner positioned to the left of the album cover. The rest of the poster will be taken up by the main image. On the left side of the poster, in the top corner there is a pug to advertise the music and a release date across the top to advertise the album.
The main image on the front of the poster will be a picture of the artist sitting on the sand with her back to the camera, looking out to sea. It will be a medium shot image and will show a back profile of the artist. I think this image will give a calm and quiet impression of the album and the artists music which will suit the style of the music on the album which is slow/contemporary pop. The beach location also contributes to the impression that the album cover gives of the calm and quietness.
In this image the artist will be wearing casual but fashionable clothing to go with the setting of the beach and to appeal to the target audience.
The artists hair will be down and wavy which I think will go well with the scene and her clothing and her makeup will be natural to keep the constant calm feeling of the location. By carrying the theme through with the artist’s looks will keep consistency of the theme.
On the left side of the cover there is a pug to advertise to the audience what the album and music is about e.g. a hit single that has been included or a bonus track. I like the size and the layout of this design however I do think that there are too many bare spaces on the poster for this initial idea. I do like the calm theme that this cover represents yet I don’t think that it will stand out on a shelf so when developing I may need to re think the design and positioning of some of the positioning.
I think this cover definitely gives a good indication of what the artists music is about. I think the cover gives out a good message to the audience that it’s aimed at which is young girls and it is clear that the advertisement isn’t aimed towards people who like loud music e.g rock music.
Initial Ideas for CD Covers
For my first initial idea I have designed the album to have a colour scheme of black and white, along with the colours from the main image on the front. As the image will be taken in the woods, colours such as green and brown will also be included within the colour scheme. The image will create an autumn feel to the album. The text in black and white will hopefully create a modern feel to the album cover along with the autumn feel of the colours from the image.
The main title of the album name is big and bold and takes up the top half space of the cover. The name of the artist fits well underneath the name of the album. The name of the artist is in smaller, italic font that slightly overlaps the album name. The rest of the cover is taken up by the main image. The pug also fits in with the design in the bottom right corner of the cover. I like the way this design fits together and I would definitely like to develop this design further.
The image on the cover will be a picture taken of me as I’m the artist and it will be taken in the location of the woods. When taking the photos I wills get someone to help and I will try out different locations in the woods and see which photographs come out the best and fit best with this design. The image of the woods represents as said before an autumn feel to the cover so this could influence the name of the album.
The pug on the bottom right corner is an advertisement for the album indicating what’s inside e.g. a special featured song. I think this layout is good as it’s big enough for the viewer to associate with, and I think that this will stand out on a shelf.
I think this design gives a good indication of what the product is and what’s inside. It’s designed to appeal to my market of young girls aged 12-19 I also think it represents the viewers interest well as the cover consists of the image of the actually artist, which is what fans what to see when they are buying their favourite pop star’s album. I do think however that the album cover won’t appeal to people who like rock or gothic music as it’s clear that the cover doesn’t address that type of audience by the type of image and colour scheme.

Both headings will be layered on top of a white banner positioned to the left of the album cover. The rest of the cover will be taken up by the main image. On the left side of the cover, in the top corner there is a pug to advertise contents of the album and to follow conventions of CD covers.
The main image on the front of the CD cover will be a picture of the artist sitting on a bench looking out to sea over the beach. It will be a long shot image and will show a back profile of the artist. I think this image will give a calm and quiet impression of the album which will suit the style of the music on the album which is slow/contemporary pop. The beach location also contributes to the impression that the album cover gives of the calm and quietness.

I think this cover definitely gives a good indication of what is inside it calm and a peaceful picture which I really like and I think it represents my music genre well. I think the cover gives out a good message to the audience that it’s aimed at which is young girls and it is clear that the album cover isn’t aimed towards people who like loud music e.g rock music.
